Biography

Biography of Lieutenant Colonel Link P. Ermis, USMC (ret)

LtCol Ermis was born in Union City, Tennessee on December 16, 1961.  His family moved to Texas when he was about two year’s old living in Euless, Sulphur Springs, and finally Mount Pleasant.  He is a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School where he lettered in football and basketball.  He was also President of the Math and Science Club as well as selected as All School Boy by the faculty.

Following graduation from Texas A&M University (Class of ’84), LtCol Ermis entered The Basic School and upon completion he reported NAS Pensacola for Naval Flight Officer Training where he was designated a Naval Flight Officer flying EA6B Prowlers.  After completing electronic warfare school and initial EA6B indoctrination, LtCol Ermis was then assigned to VMAQ-2.

During LtCol Ermis’ first assignment to VMAQ-2, he twice deployed to Western Pacific (WESTPAC ) as part of Detachment Zulu .  Following the second deployment, Detachments Zulu and Yankee were deployed to Southwest Asia in support of Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM where LtCol Ermis flew almost 40 combat missions to include Day 1, Wave 1 attacks into Iraq.

Returning from Southwest Asia, LtCol Ermis was selected to attend Amphibious Warfare School and subsequently reassigned back to VMAQ-2.  While assigned to VMAQ-2, he orchestrated the reorganization of VMAQ-2 detachments into three (3) standing squadrons.   Also during this period, LtCol Ermis again made two (2) WESTPAC deployments.  Returning home, he was assigned to Marine Corps Combat Development Command to write Joint and Marine Corps Doctrine.  Following this assignment, LtCol Ermis was selected to attend Marine Corps Command and Staff College.   

Completing the Command and Staff College, LtCol Ermis was ultimately assigned to VMAQ-1 as Executive Officer deploying in support of Operations NORTHERN and SOUTHERN WATCH.  Following SOUTHERN WATCH, LtCol Ermis was selected for command of MWHS-2 serving as Commanding Officer for two years.  During this period MWHS-2 was recognized with a Meritorious Unit Citation for support to Operations ENDURING and IRAQI FREEDOM.  After relinquishing command, LtCol Ermis held staff positions at the 1st MAW and then MARCENT participating in numerous exercises and OIF/OEF until his retirement in 2007.  LtCol Ermis then moved to Huntsville, Texas where he received his teaching certification.  He taught US History at Mance Park Middle School from 2007-2016 and currently teaches PreAP World History and World Geography at Huntsville High School.

LtCol Ermis currently holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M University and a Masters of Arts Degree in Military Studies from the Marine Corps University.  His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (3), Air Medal w/Valor and Strike Flight (6), Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2), and Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal.  LtCol Ermis is married to the former Jana Boomer (deceased) of Houston, Texas.  They have two children.  Capt Slade Ermis who is a Marine Corps Aviator flying KC-130’s and Brooke Sweet, who is married to Lt Nicholas Sweet, a Navy Construction Battalion Engineer (SEABEE).  Link and Jana have three grandchildren, Hunter, Liam, and Jake.
